So we had a really awesome day yesterday.
I'm sure anybody who likes Spongebob has heard about the new Christmas special and album coming out (and many of you have probably already bought the DVD and mp3s), but what could be better than to hear the songs in concert?
Here in LA we have this fancy outdoor shopping mall called The Grove, and they held a free concert with the voice cast performing the songs from the album! Tom Kenny (Spongebob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy), Mr. Lawrence (Plankton), and Jill Talley (Karen) were all there! For some reason Rodger Bumpass (Squidward) and Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs) weren't there, but I guess they're not really featured on the album.
The It's A Spongebob Christmas! album is an incredible collection of songs. (The website has/had free previews with only the endings missing.) I haven't mentioned it here before, but I'm absolutely in love with lush late '60s pop music, especially The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds and Smile, songs like "Grocer Jack" and "Great Big World", and groups like The Turtles and The Lemon Pipers. That's why The Best Day Ever is one of our favorite albums, and the new album perfectly captures the spirit of that style, plus A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector and much more.
And it was such a special treat to see them performed live!
We also got to see the "world premiere" of the special (even though lots of people have probably watched the DVD already), but it was only the very beginning and end.
We would've gotten autographs (and we even had a drawing from a Spongebob storyboard artist they could've signed), but we were told that we needed to sign up for it and get wristbands, which nobody mentioned before. Seems unfair, if you ask us, but it was still an awesome evening.
Here's to Spongebob and their embracing of classic pop music!
Also, the comic book is still available, and I'm still drawing that comic strip: tymime.deviantart.com/journal/…
